Banning smartphones in schools seems to improve mental health and improve grades
A recent study conducted by Sara Abrahamsson at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health has shown some interesting results when schools decided to stop students from using smartphones. Research uses detailed administrative and survey data to explore the consequences of smartphone bans on middle school students' mental health and educational outcomes. The study found that when smartphones were banned, students did better in school, felt less stressed, and there was less bullying. This was especially true for girls and those from families that aren't very rich, who showed the biggest improvements. This would mean that banning smartphones increases equality in learning results between students from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
Technology improves learning results
At School of Gaming, we believe that not all screen time is bad. What really matters is how we use technology. The study from Norway makes it clear that using phones without a purpose in school can lead to problems like lower grades and more stress. However, when technology is used in a good way, like for educational games, it can make learning fun and effective.
Technology like game-based learning tools makes lessons interesting and helps students learn better. These tools are designed to fit different learning styles and help each student learn in their own way. By using technology wisely in schools, we can help students pay more attention, understand more, and enjoy learning.
So, what's the verdict?
While the study from Norway shows that banning smartphones in schools can have good effects, it's also important to think about how we can use technology to help education. There is a number of academic research showing that digital devices and digital content can be great for learning if used right.
For example, they can give students access to a lot of information, that can't be found in textbooks, and new ways to study which support everybody's own way of learning.
For older students it might be justifiable to allow them to use smartphones for learning, but only on teacher’s terms. This way, we can avoid the problems of distraction and stress while still using the benefits of technology. This balanced approach could make learning better and help prepare students for a world where technology is everywhere.
